September 18, 2018
The first meeting of the 2018-2019, for the Beta Delta Chapter, of Delta Kappa Gamma, was held on September 18, 2018, at the Newark Public Library. President Edna Ridenbaugh welcomed all members and our guests, our teacher grant recipients. Ronna Beery made a motion to have our dinner first and Kay Hickman seconded the motion. All members agreed and the motion was passed.
After our dinner, Edna continued our program with the introduction of our grant recipients.
Dawne Conger teaches fourth grade at Licking Heights Elementary. Her field is in fourth grade math and science. She used her grant for flexible seating. Dawne has different yoga balls, stools, standing desks, and yoga bands for desks. These items help her students stay focused on their work and their attention span. Her students say that they really like the new seating in their classroom!
Carissa Smith is a gifted teacher in the Licking Valley School District. She works with forth and fifth grade gifted students. Carissa has started a new program and is involving other school districts in the county to have a yearly competition for all those students. She used her grant to buy new questions, medals, awards, and buzzers.
Lynn Mason and Kim O'Dell work at Newark High School. Kim was not able to attend, but Lynn explained her program. Newark High School has started a Guided Reading Program to help students with a reading disability. Lynn works with ninth and tenth graders. They work in close settings, have independent reading, and try to help the students get interested in reading. Lynn was able to buy 22 new reading books with her grant. Her students really love reading books that do not stink or have stains!! She also thanked Jan Cassell for telling her about the grant.
Garnet Andrews teaches two classes of8thGrade English, one 7thGrade Honor's English, and one 8thGrade Honor's English class. Garnet uses the “Seesaw Program” in her classrooms. She used her grant to buy “Seesaw Plus” and the left over money went into her “Donor's Choice Fund”, to help buy ten Chrome Books for her students. This program helps her students write, do videos, document their thoughts, and make presentations. Garnet can also give feedback to her students. Her students love writing the school paper and being able to have their own Chrome Book to use every day!
Eileen McNally brought in wonderful posters of students using items that their teachers were able to purchase through the grant. Those teachers were: Amy Keller, Natalie Napper, and Amanda Harp.
Kay Hickman brought in a large thank-you note, as well as many individual thank-you letters from students in Angie Hile's classroom, at Stevenson Elementary. She teaches third grade and used the grant to purchase flexible seating. It was so nice to have Kay read letters written by the students, thanking us for their new yoga balls. The students really love the new seats!
We also received a thank-you from the Treasurer of the Granville Board of Education, on behalf of the physical education teacher. This teacher was on a leave of absence, and the board was going to buy these items she wanted and present them to her when she returned to her classroom. This would make a wonderful present for this teacher when she returned!
Kay Hickman and her committee are still accepting applications. So far she has 6 applications.
Edna Ridenbaugh continued our regular meeting with Debbie Weber reading the minutes from our May 5, 2018 Founder's Day Brunch, held at Moundbuilder's Country Club.
